Canada’s first kidney transplant livestream reaches 36 million

April 12, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Think back to the photos from the 1800s – crowds being brought into operating “theatres” to catch the “spectacle of surgery.” Medical professionals watched to learn; the curious came to witness miraculous medicine. On May 10, 2017, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton brought more than 36 million people into an operating room to watch one of its most skilled surgeons transplant a kidney from Naga Turaga into her husband using Facebook Live.

Join IABC Golden Horseshoe as we hear from Agnes Bongers, Director of Public Affairs, Alexandria Anderson, Public Affairs Specialist, and Dr Darin Treleaven, Medical Director of the Nephrology Program and Transplant Program, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton as they demonstrate how they used this most modern communication tool to support the goals of the organization.

They will take us through the sometimes challenging process of developing and ensuring a fulsome plan and organization agreement to create a successful livestreaming event, discuss lessons learned, share the how-to tools that can be incorporated into future events and we’ll also look at the measurable success.
